Keynote Speaker:

Zihe Rao - President, Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biotechnology and Medicine (TJAB) 

Zihe Rao, President of Nankai University, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and also holds the following positions: Deputy of the National People’s Congress; Standing Committee Member of the China Association for Science and Technology; President of the Biophysical Society of China; a Council Member of the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB); Board Member of the National Basic Science Research Program (“973”)and Chairman of the Frontier Science Group; and Chairman of the National Key Research Program(2006-2020):“Protein Research Plan”. Professor Rao’s major research focus involves the structure, function and innovative drug discovery targeting important virus- and tumor-related proteins. Professor Rao has achieved a number of major research results in this area, with significant contributions relating to the SARS coronavirus, the influenza virus, and the mitochondrial respiratory membrane protein Complex II. To date, he has published 230 articles in international scientific journals, including 3 Nature papers and 2 Cell papers. His total number of citations exceeds 2,000. Professor Rao has also applied for 18 innovation patents. Professor Rao was honored with the Qiushi Outstanding Young Scholar Award in 1999; the He-Liang-He-Li Foundation Science and Technology Prize in 2003; the Chen Jiageng Science Prize for Life Science in 2006; the highest award from the Third World Academy of Science, the Trieste Science Prize, in 2006; and the first Life Achievement Prize from the Tan Jia-Zhen Awards for Life Sciences. Professor Rao was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003, and a Member of the Third World Academy of Science in 2004.

Greg B. Scott – President and Founder, ChinaBio® LLC

Mr. Scott has helped launch over thirty life science startups in the U.S. and China as a founder, investor and advisor. He founded the ChinaBio® LLC in January 2007 to help fund and mentor early stage life science companies in China, and provide consulting and research services to pharma and biotech companies with business interests in China. Mr. Scott is also the president and co-founder of Life Science Angels, an angel investment group that has funded 30 biotechnology and medical device companies since 2005, and executive editor of ChinaBio® Today. He is also a strategic adviser to ChinaSF, an initiative of the Mayor of San Francisco to connect China and San Francisco business interests. He previously held senior executive positions at Price Waterhouse, Capgemini and MCI, and was co-founder of a 200-person consulting firm. Mr. Scott attended University of Missouri, where he studied mathematics, microbiology and computer science.

Peng Cheng, PhD - Senior Director, Chemistry Department, WuXi Apptec

Dr Cheng peng is the Vice president of WuXi AppTec(Tianjin),where he is leading one of the Chemistry Divisions working on CRO research, experience in lead optimization, structure-based drug design, pharmacokinetics and intellectual property protection. After obtain his B.A.degree in Peking University in 1992,he got Ph.D. in Organic Chemistr at New York University in 1999. Afer graduation, Dr Cheng has been working in the pharmaceutical/biological industry,including Amgen、Metabolex、Academy of Sciences of Shandong Province etc. He has experience in drug discovery、drug design, execution and troubleshooting of multi-step syntheses of heterocycles and synthetic methodology development. In Metabolex , he was expert in developing drug candidates in several target classes (kinases, nuclear receptors, GPCRs, carboxylase) and key contributor for successfully advancing compounds from lead to clinical trial candidates in two projects.

John Z. Gong, PhD, MD - VP and CTO, Managing Director, US Operations, JOINN Laboratories

Dr. Gong serves as the VP and Chief Technology Officer of JOINN Laboratories. He joined the company in March 2008 with ten years of US FDA regulatory experience in new drug development. He served as a Toxicology and Pharmacology Reviewer in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and conducted primary and critical reviews of numerous IND and NDA applications for both small molecules and biologics. These reviews covered various areas such as pharmacology, PK/PD, ADME, and toxicology studies. He represented the FDA to pharmaceutical companies regarding complex regulatory issues in Pre-IND, End-of-Phase 2, and NDA meetings; advised pharmaceutical and biotech companies in optimizing drug developmental strategies. Since joined JOINN, Dr. Gong actively promotes and implements international standards at JOINN, leading to the AAALAC accreditation in 2008, and US FDA inspection in July 2009. JOINN’s study reports have been accepted to support clinical trials in the U.S. afterwards. Dr. Gong is a member of the Drug Safety Evaluation Committee of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, and an ad hoc specialist of AAALAC. Dr. Gong received his Ph.D. in Toxicology from New York University in 1996 and a medical degree from Beijing Medical College in 1984.

Hao Hong, PhD - Chairman and CEO, Asymchem Laboratories Inc.

Dr. Hong established Asymchem Laboratories in RTP, North Carolina in 1995. Since its inception, Asymchem has grown from a small kilo-scale custom synthesis manufacturer to a global player in the CRO/CMO pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing with over a thousand employees worldwide. Asymchem’s rapid early success inspired Dr. Hong to return to China in 1998 to invest, resulting in the creation of Asymchem’s four subsidiary companies, located in Tianjin Economic and Development Area (TEDA), Tianjin; Fuxin, Liaoning; and Dunhua, Jilin. Dr. Hong has actively directed and ensured the proper establishment and growth of all aspects of Asymchem, including R&D, QA, safety, technical and business development. Today, Asymchem is one of the industry’s front-runners, garnering the respect and admiration of peers, clients, and field specialists alike. Asymchem’s phenomenal growth in the past decade and a half is a testament to Dr. Hong's leadership skills, long-term vision, and perseverance. Dr. Hong obtained his Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing in 1987, and finished his post-doctorate training at the department of Pharmaceutical and Chemistry at the University of Georgia in 1989. Dr. Hong has over 13 publications, including 4 in JACS and 4 in JOC. He is a visiting professor at Sichuan University and an economic development consultant for the Dunhua municipality, as well as a co-chair of the TEDA Business Association. Dr. Hong was chosed as one of the 2008 China Top 1000 Talents by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee in May 2009, was invited as a responsible officer of the China Top 1000 Talents candidates selecting committee in Nov.

Wayne Li, PhD - General Project Manager, Morningside Technologies

Dr. Wayne Li has over 18 years of experiences in pharmaceutical and biotech research and development. He joined Morningside Technologies as an Investment Manager in 2007, which focuses heavily on biopharmaceutical and health care investments at early and middle stages. Previously, Dr. Li was the Director of the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetic Department at Genelabs and Manager of Preclinical Pharmacology Department at Rigel. He also served as a Project Manager in Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department of Covance Laboratories Inc. Dr. Li received his Master of Science degree from Research Center for Eco-environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and his PhD from Brigham Young University. He did his post-doctor research at Haskell Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine of DuPont Company and worked thereafter as a research chemist for more than five years. Through his career, Dr. Li has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers and given more than 40 presentations on international or national conferences.

Walter Lau, PhD - Vice President, Fidelity Asia Ventures

Walter Lau joined Fidelity Asia Ventures (FAV) in 2008, specializing in healthcare investment in China. He has over ten years of industrial and investment experiences in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. Walter joined FAV from Onyx Pharmaceuticals, a biotech company based in the San Francisco bay area. He was in Corporate Development, and led investment in worldwide product opportunities through M&A and licensing. Prior to that, Walter held various positions in Corporate and Business Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS), focusing on global business development opportunities, including therapeutics and technology platform, especially in the oncology area. Prior to BMS, Walter held positions of increasing responsibilities in field sales, product marketing, and business development at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in the United States. Walter received his business training from UC Berkeley, his M.S. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and PhD in Biophysics, both from University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with honor from California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Chuck Ng - Managing Director, Suma Ventures

Chuck is Managing Director of Hambrecht Suma Capital and is involved in investments across the life science and other emerging technology sectors. His current portfolio includes a number of biotechnology companies in therapeutic discovery, CRO, CMO and other innovative technology companies with cross border strategy between US and China. Prior to Hambrecht Suma Capital, Chuck worked for eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) and had responsibilities in int'l expansion and financial strategy of eBay's PayPal business unit. In this role, he led the expansion of PayPal's global footprints to Singapore (APAC HQ), Australia, China, Europe and the formation of PayPal Bank. As a result of his leadership, he had won the "PayPalian" Award, the highest award at PayPal as well as 4 "MVP" Awards. Prior to eBay, he worked for Chiron Corporation (now Novartis), the second largest biotech company by revenue after Genentech in San Francisco Bay Area, where he managed the global hedging program as well as the strategic investment at Chiron. Chuck is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and also studied at Tsinghua University in China. He is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, and is conversant in Japanese.

R. Stephen Porter, PharmD, CSO, Medicilon - MPI Preclinical Research

Dr. Porter has over thirty years of experience in medical care delivery, research and pharmaceutical development. Dr. R. Stephen Porter is former President, CEO and Chairman of the VDDI Pharmaceuticals. He also served as Chief Scientific Advisor to MPI Research, a full service preclinical CRO. Dr. Porter was formerly Executive Director of Medical Affairs for Therapeutic Antibodies Inc., an international biopharmaceutical firm, headquartered in Nashville, formed VDDI after 5 years at Therapeutic Antibodies Inc. (TAb) where he shepherded the development of polyclonal antibodies utilized in the treatment of envenomations, and inflammatory disease states and toxicologic emergencies. Prior to Tab, he served as Associate Director of Cardiovascular and Drug Metabolism at American Cyanamid Company’s Medical Research Division. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Cardiovascular Pharmacology at the Likoff Cardiovascular Institute within the Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He has also held academic positions at the Universities of East Carolina and North Carolina Medical Schools. Dr. Porter received his doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Michigan, where he also completed his undergraduate degree and a Clinical Pharmacy residency. His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Royal Society of Medicine, and Fellowship in the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.

Maria Song, PhD, MD - President, VPS-CRO Group  

Dr. Maria Song graduated from Peking Union Medical University in 1995, Dr. Song was honored with MD Before joining Venturepharm Dr Song had been undertaking important positions in a famous pharmaceutical company. Leading R&D of a series of national type 1, type2 and type4 new drugs, Dr Song has enormous experience in the whole process of pre-clinical pharmacy, pharmacology and clinical research. From 2000 Dr Song has been directing at Venturepharm Laboratory, which is the first publicly listed and China based R&D pharmaceutical company. Venturepharm has been maintaining its leading position on pharmaceutical and R&D sector in China. Leading by Dr. Song Venturepharm CRO Services has becoming the largest clinical CRO in China in terms of its therapeutic areas. Venturepharm CRO Services is the only international CRO in China, which is publicly listed abroad. It is also recognized as one of the most authority CRO in clinical research in traditional Chinese medicine. In year 2003, Venturepharm CRO Services is honored as one of the 10 best national foreign investor companies in China.

Marc Schueler, MD, PhD, MBA - Director Venturing, DSM

Dr. Schueler has been active in Venture Capital for more than 10 years investing in more than 40 companies and VC funds worldwide generating an overall IRR of 26%. He was a partner in 4 VC funds with a combined raised capital of more than US$ 500 million and is since 2009 located in Beijing to set-up a new Investment Vehicle for China for the Dutch Life & Material Sciences Company DSM, whose global Venture Capital program he had build up in the last 6 years. Previously he held Senior Executive Positions at Procter& Gamble and McKinsey in Europe and the USA. He is a MD graduate and qualified Eye Surgeon from the University of Heidelberg and holds a PhD from the University of Freiburg in immunology and internal medicine as well as a MBA from the University of Bradford, UK, with a specialisation in Finance.

Bo Wen, MBA - Managing Director, The Balloch Group

Bo Wen joined The Balloch Group in 2005 and leads the company’s investment banking deal sourcing team. He has worked with the firm’s alliance partner CIBC World Markets in participating in more than 30 IPOs or follow-on offerings in the U.S. and has closed five private equity deals for Chinese clients. From 2003 to 2004, Mr. Wen served as Deputy General Manager at the Chongqing-based New Open Group, a real estate developer and investor in the education sector. Prior to that, he spent six years with CPMIEC, a leading Chinese aerospace firm, including three years overseeing the company’s business in Iran. Mr. Wen received his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business in Canada and graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology with dual bachelor degrees in Welding Technology and Technological English.

Pu Wang - Co-CEO, Head of China Office, Xin Tech (Bio Sciences) Ltd.

Ms. Wang has over fifteen years of hands-on experience in the life science industry in China. She is Co-CEO and one of the founders of XinTech (Bio Science) Ltd, an Israeli company focusing on Chinese licensing, co-development and M&A deals, primarily with Israeli technology companies. Career highlights include executive positions with Syngenta China, the world’s largest agrochemical company; Burrill & Company, a San Francisco based life-science oriented venture capital and merchant banking firm; Bayer China and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. Ms. Wang holds an MBA from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a Masters of Economics from China Agricultural University and a B.Sc. in chemistry from Jilin Agricultural University.

Ian Wisenberg - SVP, Strategic Development, ChinaBio® LLC

Ian Wisenberg serves as ChinaBio's chief liaison with key executives and investors in the US, and is leading ChinaBio’s Accelerator initiative. Formerly Senior Vice President and CFO of BIOCOM, the largest regional life science association in the US, Mr. Wisenberg also led BIOCOM's Capital Development initiative and built its "VC incubator" in San Diego. He brings over 25 years of experience in international finance, business development and administration, and serves on the board of two California-based biotech companies. Prior to BIOCOM, Mr. Wisenberg was Vice President of Finance and Administration, as well as interim President, Secretary and Treasurer of a secured broadband media streaming company. Mr. Wisenberg holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in accounting from Cape Town University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Timothy Wong, PhD - Market Development Manager, Drug Discovery, Pharma and CRO, Asia Pacific, Invitrogen, part of Life Technologies

Dr. Timothy Wong is the Asia Pacific Market Development Manager for Pharma and CRO sectors in Invitrogen, part of Life Technologies. He also holds business management responsibility in Invitrogen supporting drug discovery and development needs in Asia Pacific. He has been with Invitrogen and previously Life Technologies/GibcoBRL since 2000. Currently, apart from building Invitrogen’s drug discovery and development business in Asia Pacific, his role is to strategize partnership/collaboration model with pharmaceutical industry, CRO and research institutes to facilitate drug discovery research in Asia Pacific. Previously, he was responsible for Invitrogen technical services and marketing communication in Pacific regions while facilitating development of proteomic research in Asia by connecting Invitrogen resources to Human Proteomic Organization and the local scientific communities. Dr. Timothy Wong received his BSc (Hons) in Biology at The Hong Kong University of Sciences & Technologies. Dr. Wong received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Chinese University of Hong Kong with focus on identifying drug resistance mechanism and improving cancer drug efficacy in multidrug resistance cancer cells. Dr. Wong has received American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Young Investigator Award.

David Xu, PhD, MBA - Managing Partner, Mingly China Growth Fund

David Xu is the Managing Partner of Mingly China Growth Fund. David has over 10 years of investment banking experience in China. Previously, David worked at EBICC, Create Capital, China Fortune Securities and Goldman Sachs. He also worked as a research fellow at Columbia Medical Center for 7 years. David received his BS degree from University of Science & Technology of China, PhD in Microbiology from Columbia University, and MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.

 

Changchun Yuan, JD - Partner, Broad & Bright

Changchun Yuan is a partner at the Beijing Office of Broad & Bright. His major practice areas are foreign investment, M&A, general corporate, healthcare and insurance. He has over 14 years experience in advising multinational clients in various industries including a number of multinational pharmaceutical and medical device companies. He advised them on corporate governance, business negotiation, license and distribution, regulatory compliance and government affairs. Before joining Broad & Bright, Changchun was a legal consultant at Coopers & Lybrand. He then became a senior associate at an international law firm and a partner at a leading Chinese law firm in Beijing. He also served as an in-house legal counsel for the Asia Pacific Region of a multinational insurance company. Changchun began his legal career in 1985 as an assistant professor in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. Changchun holds an LLM from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and a JSD from Stanford Law School. He is admitted to the National Bar of China and the State Bar of New York.

Dan Zhang, MD, MPH - Chairman and CEO, Fountain Medical Development Ltd.

Dr. Dan Zhang has more than 10 year of drug development experience. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Fountain Medical Development, a full-service clinical CRO with primary operation in South East Asia and China. Previously, Dr. Zhang was the Head of Clinical Development and Global Safety Assessment at Sigma-Tau Research Inc, a US research arm of Sigma-Tau S.P.A., one of the largest Italy-based pharmaceutical firms. Dr. Zhang was a vice president at the Quintiles Transnational Corp., responsible for the planning and implementation of business development strategies in Greater China Area. Before joining Quintiles, Dr. Zhang provided consulting services to many pharmaceutical, medical device and health insurance companies, such as Eli Lilly and Company, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc., Medtronic, Inc., and CIGNA Health Care, etc. He is currently a senior consultant to Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences/Peking Union Medical College. Dr. Zhang was an Executive Director of Sino-American Professional Pharmaceutical Society (SAPA) and President (2006~2007) of the Chinese Biopharmaceutical Association-USA (CBA). Dr. Zhang received his pre-med training from Beijing University and received his M.D. from Peking Union Medical College. He continued his study at the Harvard School of Public Health and received an MPH in health policy and management. Dr. Zhang continued his training at the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained his master’s degree in healthcare management in 1998 and is working on his Ph.D. dissertation in the field of health economics and finance.

Nathan Zhang, MD, PhD, MBA - Founder & CEO, Sinocro Medicals

Dr. Nathan Zhang is the Chairman and CEO of Sinocro Partners, a merchant bank specialized in Chinese life science industry. Dr. Zhang was the advisor of 3sbio’s US IPO and the driving forces to make 3sbio became the first Chinese pharmaceutical and also the first Chinese biotech IPO on US capital market and raised 123M USD in 2007. Dr. Zhang is the founder, and CEO of Sinocro Medicals. Sinocro Medical’s fertility monitor (Ovacue) is the only home use device can predict Ovulation seven days in advance and correctly indicated the exact ovulation time; FLO Foot is a device for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). SmartDose and Oyster Shell are the innovated portable infusion pump system which does require neither gravity nor electricity powers. Dr. Zhang was the CEO of Chipscreen Bioscience; Dr. Zhang build Chipscreen into the largest R&D based Biotech Company focused on discovery of novel small molecule drugs. Dr. Zhang was recognized as one of “China’s New Strength, Top Individuals of China Pharmaceutical Industry” in 2003. Dr. Zhang was the Managing Director at Delirium, a senior consultant at KPMG LLP's New York office; worked at the Credit Suisse First Boston's investment banking group in New York. Dr. Zhang was also a scientific co-founder of CDR Therapeutics, Inc., a Seattle-based bio-pharmaceutical company in 1996. Dr. Zhang received his Ph.D. in pharmacology from University of Pennsylvania, M.D. from eight years program of the Tianjin Medical University, and MBA from the University of Chicago with a concentration in Finance and Accounting. Dr. Zhang was awarded James A. McLaughlin Award from American National Student Research Forum and Brupbacher Young Investigator Award from Charles Rudolph Brupbacher Foundation in Switzerland. Dr. Zhang has three scientific research papers published on Nature Biotechnology.

Yu Zhao, PhD - Vice President, Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biotechnology and Medicine (TJAB) 

Dr. Yu Zhao is currently Vice President of Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biotechnology and Medicine (TJAB) in Tianjin, China, where he focuses on the establishment of TJAB to bring innovative and affordable therapeutics to patients in both China and rest of the world. After growing up in Tianjin and obtaining his B.A. degree there in 1987, Dr. Zhao obtained his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with Professor Robert A Harris at Indiana University in 1994. After graduate school, he has been working in the pharmaceutical/biological industry, including Aventis, Bayer, and Amgen. He has developed expertise in drug discovery, process development, cGMP operations, and drug commercialization. At his last position at Amgen, Executive Director, QC, he was responsible for over 30 clinical products related GMP testing with about 200 staff member and $30 million operation.
