Keynote Speakers:

William Keller - Vice GM, Shanghai Zhangjiang Biotech & Pharmaceutical Base Development Co., Ltd.

Mr. William Keller is a highly energetic and determined Senior Corporate Executive with a rich experience in pharmaceuticals in South America and Asia Pacific, with a focus on China. Mr. Keller enjoys a high reputation for strong leadership, business acumen, excellent negotiation skills and cultural sensitivity, all of which have created strong personal relationships and credibility with governments, customers, staff and press. Awarded Honorary Citizen of Shanghai by the municipal government, Mr. Keller is also holder of a permanent resident permit. Mr. Keller graduated from School of Economics and Business Administration (Zurich) in 1972 and has taken several Management and Leadership Courses at IMD and London Business School during 1990-2001.

Mr. Keller has been the General Manager of Roche China Ltd. and Shanghai Roche Pharmaceutical Ltd. from 1994 to 2002, during which he formulated, developed overall Roche strategy for China including negotiation and establishment of 5 joint ventures and one holding company reaching sale end of 2002 of USD 300 million and staff of 1900 people and developed Roche to a leading pharmaceutical company in the China market with annual sales of USD 150 million. Managing Director (1990-2002) and Area Manager Far East for Vitamin Division (1991-1993) of Roche (Hong Kong), General Manager of Roche (Columbia) from (1988-1990) and Deputy General Manager of Roche Brazil (1976-1988). Dedicated to the development of biopharmaceutical industry in Shanghai, Mr. Keller started his own business in early 2003. Keller Pharma Consultancy (Shanghai) Company works as a bridge connecting SMEs and start-ups in Shanghai with possible partners and/or investors around the world. Besides managing his own consulting company, Mr. Keller is also Consultant to Zhangjiang Biotech & Pharmaceutical Base, Honorary President of RDPAC (R&D-based Pharmaceutical Association in China), Vice Chairman of Shanghai Association of Foreign Investment Enterprises, Board member of Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (Group) Co., Ltd and TaiGen Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and Senior Consultant of Shanghai Foreign Investment Development Board. Since 2007, he is Chairman of HBM Biomed China. 

Jason (Gang) Jin, PhD - President & CEO, ShanghaiBio Corporation

Dr. Jason (Gang) Jin is the President & CEO of ShanghaiBio Corporation (SBC for CRO), and Co-Founder & Executive VP of Global Business of Shanghai Biochip Co. Ltd (SBC), a leading biotech in China with lab operations at Shanghai and global business office at New Jersey in U.S. Dr. Jin is also an adjunct professor at the Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences (SIBS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Dr. Jin has extensive scientific and business development experience in drug discovery and development. He has successfully developed and managed a number of R&D collaborative projects in biology discovery, preclinical research, and clinical trials with top global pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Dr. Jin has held the former positions of Director of Genomics Lab at Purdue Pharma (USA), Director of Functional Genomics at Salk Institute (USA), Founder Director of National Engineering Center for Biochip at Shanghai (China), and radiologist at Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital (China). He received Ph.D. and Postdoctoral Fellow in biology from University of California, San Diego (USA), and medical degree from School of Medicine, Fudan University (Shanghai Medical University, China).

Greg B. Scott - President and Founder, ChinaBio® Accelerator and Founding Principal, ChinaBio® Consulting

Mr. Scott has helped launch over thirty life science startups in the U.S. and China as a founder, investor and advisor. He founded ChinaBio® Accelerator to help fund and mentor early stage life science companies in China. He is also the Founding Principal of ChinaBio® Consulting which assists U.S. and China life science companies and investors leverage the opportunities available in China. He also serves as the chairman and acting CEO for ChinaBio® Therapeutics, created to in-license and develop novel drugs in China. Mr. Scott is also the president and co-founder of Life Science Angels, an angel investment group that has funded 22 biotechnology and medical device companies since 2005, and executive editor of the ChinaBio® Today newsletter. He previously held senior executive positions at Price Waterhouse, Capgemini and MCI, and was the co-founder of a 200-person consulting firm. Mr. Scott attended University of Missouri, where he studied mathematics, microbiology and computer science.

Dr. Yi (Robert) Li - Partner, BioVeda China

Dr. Yi (Robert) Li, PhD, partner, has over fifteen years of Life Sciences experience in venture investment and management, R&D, and corporate development in the China and the U.S. Prior to joining BioVeda China, Dr. Li was Vice President of Sinogen International, Ltd., (Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China), a biotechnology investment holding company of H&Q Asia Pacific, a venture capital firm with US$1.8 billion under management. Dr. Li spent nine years with Sinogen during which he evaluated biotech investment opportunities and corporate collaborations throughout China, as well as, the U.S.Prior to Sinogen, Dr. Li was one of the first scientists to join one of the most successful genomics companies in the U.S., Human Genome Sciences, Inc. where he held positions as Associate Director, Protein Therapeutics, and Group Leader, Drug Target Development. Dr. Li has been advisor to several Chinese and U.S. biotechnology companies including Sibiono Biotechnology Company (China) and Abmaxis, Inc and Genpharm, Inc. (SF Bay Area U.S.). He has served on the Board of Directors of Egen Corporation (San Diego, CA), and Shenzhen Kexing Biotech Co. (Shenzhen, China). Dr. Li is a former Board member of the Sino-American Pharmaceutical Association (SAPA). He is also an inventor of thirty five issued US patents. Dr. Li ranked 3rd place in the CUSBEA Scholarship exam and came to the U.S. in 1985 as part of the CUSBEA program. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard University, his M.S. in Cell Biology from Baylor College of Medicine, and B.S. in Biochemistry from Nanjing University.

Charles Hsu, PhD, MBA, Partner - Bay City Capital

Dr. Hsu has over 20 years of life science industry experience, including 17 years as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, dedicated to investments in early-stage life science and healthcare companies. He was a General Partner of the Walden Group and its affiliate Walden International from early 1996 through mid-2003. Prior to joining Walden, he co-managed life science investments at Advent International, a global private equity firm, based in Boston. He has co-founded or invested in over 25 companies, and has served as a Director on over 15 Boards. He has been investing internationally throughout his career, and has been involved with several companies in the Greater China region, as founder, investor, director and/or advisor, including Asia Renal Care, Wuxi Pharmatech, Eureka, Progentech and LEAD Therapeutics.  He holds an AB in Biochemistry from Harvard and his PhD and MBA from Stanford.

Jennifer (Jing-Shan) Hu, PhD, Director of Licensing & External Research, Merck & Co

Dr. Jing-Shan Hu is responsible for identifying and developing new product and technology opportunities in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan for Merck in the area of partnership, licensing-in, and acquisition. Prior to joining Merck, Jing-Shan spent three years at Roche Palo Alto as Research Leader, heading Functional Biology and Toxicogenomics. Previously, Jing-Shan worked at Affymetrix in various capacities, including establishing and managing programs with partners to demonstrate the application of Affymetrix GeneChip technology in Toxicology/Pharmacogenomics studies. Jing-Shan started her career at Human Genome Sciences, Inc. as a scientist and later as Project Leader of its VEGF-2 Protein Therapeutics Program. Jing-Shan did her post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. She earned her PhD from Univ. of Texas & M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and her bachelor's degree from Peking University in Beijing. Jing-Shan has authored 15 papers in peer reviewed journals such as Science, Nature Genetics, and Nature. She is also an inventor of 16 patents and patent applications.

Huang Lu, MD, MBA - Morningside

Since joined Morningside 5 years ago, Dr. Huang has led over a dozen healthcare/life-science investments in China and the US. Prior to joining Morningside, Dr. Huang served as a Marketing Associate in the Public Relations & Marketing group at Continuum Health Partners, a five-hospital partnership in New York City.  Dr. Huang holds her medical degree from Shanghai Second Medical University, trained and practiced in Obstetrics/Gynecology, and her M.B.A. degree from St. John's University, New York.

Kevin Li, PhD - Partner, HBM BioMed China

Kevin is a Partner at the HBM BioMed China, a Shanghai-based venture capital fund focused on China-related biomedical investment opportunities with over $100M under management.  Prior to returning to China in 2007, Kevin was involved in various entrepreneurial and investment activities in the US, as an early management member of GenoSpectra, co-founder of Fountain Medical Development and Washington Healthcare Management, and investment manager at a $120M venture capital fund focused on biotech investment.  Kevin is a graduate of Nankai University and Indiana University, and was a Damon Runyon - Walter Winchell Fellow at Stanford University.

Wayne Li, PhD - General Project Manager, Morningside

Dr. Wayne Li has over 18 years of experiences in pharmaceutical and biotech research and development. He joined Morningside Technologies, as an Investment Manager in 2007, which focuses heavily on biopharmaceutical and health care investments at early and middle stages.  Prior to joining Morningside Technologies, Dr. Wayne Li was the Director of the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetic Department at Genelabs. Before taking that position, he served as the Manager of Preclinical Pharmacology Department at Rigel. He had also served as a Project Manager in Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department of Covance Laboratories Inc. Dr. Li got his Master of Science Degree from Research Center for Eco-environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ph.D. from Brigham Young University. He did his post-doctor research at Haskell Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine of DuPont Company and worked thereafter as a research chemist for more than 5 years. Through his career, Dr. Li has more than 30 peer-reviewed papers published in leading scientific journals and more than 40 presentations on international or national conferences. His research interests and expertise ranged from separate science, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, various in vitro and in vivo preclinical studies for drug discovery and development, pharmaceutical chemistry, to pharma-project licensing-in or licensing-out deals.

D. Thomas Oakley, MBA - President and Chief Executive Officer Bridge Laboratories

Mr. D. Thomas Oakley is currently President and CEO of Bridge Laboratories, a US-owned, preclinical contract research organization that provides US-level regulatory compliant drug development services globally in lab facilities in the Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Beijing, China.  Mr. Oakley has over 25 years of domestic and international leadership experience in major contract research organizations, industrial products and consumer products businesses.  Prior to joining Bridge, Mr. Oakley spent nine years at Covance, Inc. where his assignments included Global Vice President Finance for the Early Development Group, Vice President of the Chemistry Division, and Global Vice President of Business Development.  Tom received his MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and is also the founder and President of DTO Associates, LLC, a consulting firm that worked with private equity firms and businesses in the areas of strategy, finance, and management.

R. Stephen Porter, PhD - CSO, Medicilon-MPI Preclinical Research Shanghai

R. Stephen Porter is the Chief Scientific Officer for Medicilon/MPI Preclinical Research Shanghai. Dr. Porter is former President, CEO and Chairman of VDDI Pharmaceuticals. He also served as Chief Scientific Advisor-Asian Operations at MPI Research. Dr. Porter has over thirty years of experience in medical care delivery, research and pharmaceutical development. Dr. Porter received his doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Michigan, where he also completed his undergraduate degree and a Clinical Pharmacy residency. His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Royal Society of Medicine, and Fellowship in the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.

Yi Shi, PhD - Managing Director, Lilly Asian Ventures

Before joining Lilly, Dr. Shi was the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of NetBig.com, an internet start-up, where he successfully grew the company to become the number one education and technology portal in China.    He began his career as a management consultant with Ernst & Young in the Life Science Practice Group and specialized in sales and marketing strategy.   Dr. Shi received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and a Master of Business Administration degree, both from Duke University.  He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Science and Technology of China.

Dr. Yi Shi joined Lilly Asian Ventures in 2007 as a Managing Director based in Shanghai, China.  Prior to the current assignment, he worked in various roles with increasing responsibility over six years at Eli Lilly and Company.  His experience includes leading the development of a comprehensive investment strategy for China as well as negotiating multiple biotechnology and pre-clinical deals world-wide.  Dr. Shi was also instrumental in the founding of InnoCentive, Inc., a Lilly Ventures portfolio company, where he managed scientific operations as well as its expansion into China.

Tai-Sen Soong, PhD – President, CDIB Bioscience Venture Management

Dr. Soong has served as President since the company's inception in December 2001 to manage CDIB Bioscience Ventures, which was launched in July 2002. This fund is emphasize in investing in both US and Taiwan, and its portfolio can be seen at its website (www.cdibbiosciencevc.com). He was the former Head of Life Science Investment Unit in Overseas business Department at China Development Industrial Bank (CDIB) since 1999. Prior to joining CDIB, Dr. Soong was an associate professor at National University of Singapore. During his service in Singapore, he had successfully launched Singapore China Biotechnology Program to introduce scientists from mainland China to assist biotechnology development in Singapore. He had also served as the Managing Director of Imagen Venture Holdings, Singapore. While he was the Director of Taiwan's Development Center for Biotechnology (1986-1995), he established an R&D base for commercial application of biotechnology and promoted Taiwan's biotech industry through product development and technology transfer. Prior to joining Development Center for Biotechnology, he was a research specialist of Monsanto Corp.. Dr. Soong earned his Ph.D. degree in Biology from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Xuehai Tan, PhD - CEO/President, HD Bio Co., Ltd

Dr. Xuehai Tan is a founder, CEO & President of HD Biosciences Co., Ltd., Shanghai, China. Dr. Tan graduated from Wuhan University of China in 1982 and obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Medical University of Ohio in 1990. He then became a postdoctoral research fellow, and later served as a research assistant professor in the Biochemistry Department of the University of Washington.

In 1993, Dr. Tan became a research scientist in Baxter Biotech. In 1995, he joined the Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute and served as a senior scientist in assay development group. From 1997 to 2000, he worked at Aurora Biosciences Co., one of the leading drug screening companies in the world at the time, as a senior scientist and project leader. In 2001, he joined Beijing HuaDa Genome Center, China, as an Associate Director, Drug Discovery and High-throughput Drug Screen. In 2002, he founded the HD Biosciences in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, whose core business is in the areas of bioassay development, high throughput drug screening, and hit-to-lead solution. Today, HD Biosciences has emerged as one of the leading biotech companies in biology CRO services in China. The company has established partnership in drug discovery business with biotech and pharmaceutical companies throughout the world.  

Kevin Xie – Partner, China Renaissance Partners

Kevin Yi-Jing Xie is a Partner at China Renaissance. Mr. Xie is responsible for China Renaissance's traditional industry business including financial services, education, consumer products and distribution and manufacturing. In addition to assisting various companies and entrepreneurs raising growth capital in China, Mr. Xie has also completed several buy-out and M&A transactions in China. In the past 3 years, Mr. Xie successfully advised Dangdang, Qihoo, UUSee, 51credit, Minrun, Ambow Education and Century21.

Prior to Joining China Renaissance in June 2005, Mr. Xie was Vice President at Credit Suisse, where he worked for seven years. During his tenure at Credit Suisse, Mr. Xie advised numerous companies in China and the greater Asia Pacific region on various capital raising and M&A transactions. Mr. Xie played an instrumental role in various transactions for several leading companies including Haier Group, China Netcom, Shanghai Electric, Beijing Enterprises, Guangshen Railway, ICBC, SINA, SK Telecom, the Korea Development Bank, Pacific Century CyberWorks / Cable & Wireless HKT and Fubon Insurance.

Mr. Xie holds a Bachelor of Economics (with Honours) degree from the University of Sydney.

David Xu, PhD - Managing Partner, Mingly China Growth Fund

David Xu is the Managing Partner of Mingly China Growth Fund. David has over 10 years of investment banking experience in China. Previously, David worked at EBICC, Create Capital, China Fortune Securities and Goldman Sachs. He also worked as a research fellow at Columbia Medical Center for 7 years. David received his BS degree from University of Science & Technology of China, Ph.D. in Microbiology from Columbia University, and MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.

Michael Xu, MD, PhD - CEO, PegBio Co., Ltd

Dr. Xu, whose expertise encompasses medicine, protein structure, pharmaceutical management, he completed his M.D. degree from Hunan Medical University and Ph.D. degree in Physiology and Biophysics from Columbia University at New York.  Prior to found the Company, he was a GM of a joint venture pharmaceutical company in China for several years. Dr. Xu had published many scientific papers including in Science.

Stella Xu, PhD, Licensing Director, Roche Pharma Partnering Asia

Dr. Stella Xu is a Licensing Director with Roche Pharma Partnering Asia. Her major responsibilities include searching potential licensing opportunities (products / technologies), and supporting transaction discussions & alliance management with Asian partners. Prior to her current position, Stella had held multiple global positions in Roche Pharma Partnering and led more than 30 product-focused due diligence projects and alliances such as Toyama, Japan Tobacco, and Maxygen. Stella joined Roche from McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm that provides strategic advices to the top management of global business leaders. At McKinsey, she led consulting engagements with biopharmaceutical clients in areas ranging from R&D strategy, marketing & sales, to corporate development and M&A activities. Prior to McKinsey, Stella was a research scientist with Isis Pharmaceuticals. Stella received her B.S. in Biophysics from Peking University; her PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology from Northwestern University.  

Chika Yoshinaga, MD - Vice President of Asia, Sofinnova Partners

Chika Yoshinaga, MD, is VP Asia, M.D., M.S. She joined Sofinnova Partners in 2007.  Over her four years as Deputy General Manager at NIF SMBC Ventures, Chika invested in five life sciences companies, four based in Europe and one in the United States. Three have completed initial public offerings: Acorda Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ACOR), BioXell (SWX: BXLN), and Innate Pharma (EURONEXT: IPH). Prior to joining the venture capital industry, Chika worked as a System Engineer in the Information System Division of the Health and Science Research Institute in Yokohama, Japan. She was also a physician intern and practiced medicine at WuaTong Hospital in Shanghai, China. Chika earned an M.S. in Bio-Engineering from Yokohama National University in Japan, as well as an M.D. in Clinical Medicine from Shanghai Medical University in China.

Ningni Yu, MD - Vice President, Shanghai Zhangjiang Biotech & Pharmaceutical Base Development Co., China

Ningni Yu, MD, graduated from Nanjing Medical University, is the adjunct professor of School of Pharmacy, Shanghai Fudan University. She is the Vice General Manager of Shanghai Zhangjiang  Bio-tech & Pharmaceutical Development Base Co., Ltd and the Executive Board Member of Pudong Science & Technology Venture Capital Co., Ltd. She has been the Visiting Scholar at University of California, USA. She has graduated from China Europe International Business School, MBA for Executives, and has finished her incubator management courses provided by the Industrial Ministry of UK.
Dr Yu has been the core leader of the construction team of Shanghai Bio-tech & Pharmaceutical Base since 1998. She has been successfully in charge of the Pudong Life Science Fund and has made her effort to investing Cathay Industrial Biotech Ltd. She has also taken part in several research projects, such as “Strategic Research Of National Biotech Business Development”, “Business Planning of Shanghai Biotech & pharmaceutical industry” , “Business Planning of Pudong Biotech & Pharmaceutical Industry” , etc. She has published some paper in recent years.
Dr Yu is the Director of Pudong Science & Technology Development Fund Bureau, the Deputy Director and the Secretary-General of Bio Pharmaceutical Association of Pudong New Area. She is the member of CPPCC Pudong New Area and the member of Shanghai Women’s Federation.

Joe Zhang, PhD - Vice President China Operations, China Preclinical Management Services

Dr. Zhang is an industry veteran toxicologist trained in the United States and China with significant experiences in all toxicology related drug development activities at leading western pharma and CRO settings.  He currently is the vice president of China operations at China Preclinical Management Services (CPMS). In this capacity, Dr. Zhang oversees all CPMS' preclinical safety projects in China. Prior to joining CHA, Dr. Zhang worked as a compound manager and an interim Head of Genetic Toxicology in the Department of Toxicology and Safety Assessment at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. He was involved in all toxicology related drug development activities for different classes of compounds including both small molecules and biologics. Before he joined Boehringer Ingelheim in 2004, Dr. Zhang worked at Covance Laboratories Inc. as a Study Director (2000-2004).  From 1995 to 1996, Dr. Zhang worked as a toxicologist at the National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, SFDA, China.   He received his Ph.D. in Toxicology from Indiana University and is a certified Diplomate of American Board of Toxicology.  He also has a MPH (majoring in Toxicology) and a Bachelor of Medicine from Beijing Medical University. Dr. Zhang has been very active in different scientific committees and organizations.  He served as a board member for Genetic Toxicology Association (GTA) and American Chinese Society of Toxicology (ACSOT) and is currently a full member of SOT, ACT, GTA, BioSafe, SAPA, and AACT.

Wei Zhou, PhD, JD - Partner, WSGR

Dr. Wei Zhou is a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, P.C., a leading law firm focusing on technology and growth company legal issues, where he focuses on corporate and intellectual property issues facing life sciences companies in the United States and China.Dr. Zhou obtained his J.D. from Stanford Law School, his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.  He is also a graduate of the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Carol Zhu, MBA - Head of Operation Management and Alliances, GSK R&D China

Ms. Carol Zhu is the Head of Operation Management and Alliances in GSK R&D China, where she is responsible for overall operational management of this newly established R&D center since July 07. The position oversees finance, IT, procurement, as well as facility related management. She is one of the key members of IACUC in GSK R&D to initiate the Laboratory Animal Research in China. Prior to joining in R&D Center, she was the Head of Clinical Operations in GSK China. She was responsible for developing clinical research strategies and implement development plan for key therapeutic products in China, such as oncology, metabolic, antiviral and CNS new products. She has in-depth knowledge and skills regarding drug development process and procedures, new product strategic planning, project allocation, patient recruitment, regulatory affairs, data management, quality control and resource management, etc,.Carol received her B.S. degree from Peking University Health Science Center (Beijing Medical University) in 1990, and obtained her MBA from Rutgers University, NJ, USA in 2006.

James Zhu, PhD, JD - Partner, Perkins Coie LLP 

James J. Zhu of Perkins Coie LLP is the managing partner of the firm's Beijing Office.  James represents pharmaceutical companies like AstraZeneca, for its newly established R&D Center in China and intellectual property strategy, as well as world renowned venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, for its investment in technology originated from China.  James also helps Chinese companies license technologies originated from US companies or universities.  Educated first at Fudan University in Shanghai, then earning a Ph.D. in biology from California Institute of Technology as well as law and business degrees from Columbia University, James helps international companies protect their global IP rights and expand research capacity in the rapidly evolving but challenging IP environment in China.

Kan Zhu, LLM - Partner, Unitalen Attorneys at Law

Mr. Zu has participated in all phases of patent prosecution, litigation, and licensing of IC, electric components and test methods, computer software, telecommunication equipment. He has negotiated numerous patent licenses, software license, distribution agreements, and agreements relating to e-commerce. He also has extensive experience in trademark registration and enforcement, as well as litigation of copyright infringement. He has handled dozens of counterfeiting and pirate issues for a number of worldwide known companies.

Prior to joining Unitalen, Mr. Zu worked as a lawyer with a famous local law firm and as an in-house intellectual property counsel with Matsushita Electric (China) Co., Ltd. handling hundreds of patent prosecution and litigation cases involved in telecommunications, electric components and computer software and hardware.  Mr. Zu received his LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 2001.
