Keynote Speaker:
Greg B. Scott – President and Founder, ChinaBio® LLC
Mr. Scott has helped launch over thirty life science startups in the U.S. and China as a founder, investor and advisor. He founded the ChinaBio® LLC in January 2007 to help fund and mentor early stage life science companies in China, and provide consulting and research services to pharma and biotech companies with business interests in China. Mr. Scott is also the president and co-founder of Life Science Angels, an angel investment group that has funded 30 biotechnology and medical device companies since 2005, and executive editor of ChinaBio® Today. He is also a strategic adviser to ChinaSF, an initiative of the Mayor of San Francisco to connect China and San Francisco business interests. He previously held senior executive positions at Price Waterhouse, Capgemini and MCI, and was co-founder of a 200-person consulting firm. Mr. Scott attended University of Missouri, where he studied mathematics, microbiology and computer science.

Carl Firth, PhD, MBA - Director, Head of Asia Healthcare, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Carl Firth is currently Head of Asia Healthcare at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, he worked in Singapore as Regional Business Development Director for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, where he looked after business development and strategic projects across the Asia Pacific region. Previously, Carl worked in China for 3 years, where he was responsible for the commercial development of new products, and for business development activities in the China market. Carl has held positions in other commercial areas in the UK, including acquisitions, licensing and competitive intelligence, and has over 5 years of pharmaceutical R&D experience. Carl holds a PhD from Cambridge University and an Executive MBA from London Business School.
Frank Grams, PhD - Global Business Development Director, Roche Global Pharma Partnering
Frank has been instrumental in setting up the Shanghai office of Roche Pharma Partnering. The office is strengthening Roche’s presence in the region and is mainly responsible for partnering activities in Korea, Singapore and Greater China including Taiwan and Hong Kong. Prior to taking up this post, from 2006 Frank was Global Head, Drug Delivery Partnering, responsible for both the strategic and life-cycle management activities related to drug delivery partnering. Frank was a Global Alliance Director from 2002, managing pivotal research alliances such as Chugai, Evotec, SGX, Syrrx and Biotie. He has been involved in about 100 transactions including product and technology deals, in- and out-licensing opportunities and also an acquisition. Frank joined the Roche Pharma Partnering team as Head of Opportunity Surveillance in July 2001, having previously worked in various research functions in Roche and at Boehringer Mannheim GmbH. Frank has a degree in chemistry from the University of Heidelberg and a Ph.D. from the Technical University of Munich within the group of Nobel laureate Robert Huber (Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry at Martinsried). His more than 40 papers have been published in well known peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Structural Biology, Journal of Molecular Biology etc. and have been cited about a thousand times. Five of them have been cited even more than a hundred times. He is also the co-author on 19 patents and patent applications.
Esther H. Lim, JD - Founding Managing Partner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, Shanghai Office
Esther H. Lim is the founding managing partner of the Shanghai office of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP. She has a broad patent practice, including litigation, prosecution, licensing, opinions, due diligence investigations, and portfolio management. She has represented many international companies from Asia, Europe, and the U.S. in complex cases. Ms. Lim frequently lectures and writes internationally on issues relating to procurement and enforcement of U.S. intellectual property rights. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Last Month at the Federal Circuit, Finnegan’s monthly newsletter distributed to subscribers worldwide. Ms. Lim taught advanced patent law and public policy courses as an adjunct professor at Howard University School of Law in the U.S. for six years. Beginning in 2010, she will teach a new IP course to postgraduate law students at Renmin University School of Law in China. Ms. Lim served on the Board of Governors of the D.C. Bar with over 85,000 members and on the Board of Governors for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) representing the interests of over 40,000 attorneys. She is Past President of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of the Greater Washington D.C. Area. In 2005, she received NAPABA’s “Best Lawyers Under 40” award. Ms. Lim is a 2007 recipient of the Burton Award for Legal Achievement, a national award for legal writing. Ms. Lim served as a law clerk to the Honorable Randall R. Rader of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Joseph McCracken, DVM - Head of Pharma Partnering Asia, Roche Pharma Partnering

Joseph McCracken is currently the Asia Regional Head for Roche Pharma Partnering, and General Manager, Roche Pharma Japan. In this role Dr. McCracken is responsible for Roche’s pharmaceutical partnering activities throughout Asia, and he is currently based in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to joining the Roche Pharma Partnering organization, Dr. McCracken held the position of Vice President, Business Development at Genentech for more than 10 years. At Genentech Joe was responsible for all business development activities at the Company, including the identification and negotiation of collaboration and licensing agreements with academic institutions, biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies throughout the world. Dr. McCracken returned to Genentech in 2000 after a seven-year absence, during which he held positions as President of Technology Licensing and Alliances at Aventis, and Vice President of Worldwide Business and Technology Development at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer S.A. During his earlier time with Genentech, Dr. McCracken served in many capacities, culminating in positions as Director of Business Development and Representative Director of Genentech Ltd., Genentech’s wholly owned subsidiary in Japan. McCracken has more than 25 years of experience in technical, business development and market development roles with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, a Master of Science in Pharmacology and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University.
Rajesh Parekh, PhD – Director, Head of Asia Healthcare Practice, McKinsey & Company

Dr. Rajesh (Raj) Parekh, a Director in the Shanghai Office of McKinsey & Company is the leader of McKinsey’s Asia healthcare practice. Since moving to Shanghai in 2005, he has focused his efforts primarily on serving pharmaceutical and medical device clients across Asia on growth strategy, R&D strategy, M&A, and business unit strategy related issues. Some of his recent experiences in include:
• Help a leading global pharmaceutical company develop strategy and plans for significant expansion of clinical development activities in Asia
• Helped a global top 3 Pharmaceutical company develop perspective on healthcare provider and financing system evolution in China, and implement innovative financing related ideas to turbo charge growth
• Developed a growth strategy for a global hospital equipment company across China/Korea/India, including assessment of R&D offshoring opportunity and strategy for partnerships with hospitals
• Helped define the 5-year China growth strategy for a global leader in medical devices – with particular focus on expansion of product portfolio and physician education initiatives
Dr. Parekh holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with focus on biochemical engineering (research thesis on production of biopharmaceuticals in genetically engineered yeast) and a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from University of California at San Diego.
Erick Rabins - Senior Vice President of Strategic Affairs, Chief Business Development Officer, C3 Jian, Inc.
Erick Rabins most recently served as Vice President of C3 Jian, Inc., an early-stage investment firm commercializing early-stage technologies from U.S. research institutions. Previously, he was the co-founder and President of Dentigenix Inc, a tissue engineering R&D company which was acquired by Ivoclar Vivadent, AG, a Liechtenstein-based international corporation. Mr. Rabins also held the position of Director of Business Operations from the early formation through the successful IPO of EDEN Bioscience Corporation and was Managing Director of Business Development at Onconome, Inc. Prior to his career as a life science entrepreneur, he spent 8 years as a risk management advisor to the high technology industry. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of several global health R&D institutions, life science trade associations and biotechnology companies. He holds a BS degree from the University of Wisconsin and a MS degree from Western Washington University.
Yi Shi, PhD - Managing Director, Lilly Asian Ventures
Dr. Yi Shi joined Lilly Asian Ventures in 2007 as a Managing Director based in Shanghai, China. Prior to the current assignment, he worked in various roles with increasing responsibility over six years at Eli Lilly and Company. His experience includes leading the development of a comprehensive investment strategy for China as well as negotiating multiple biotechnology and pre-clinical deals world-wide. Dr. Shi was also instrumental in the founding of InnoCentive, Inc., a Lilly Ventures portfolio company, where he managed scientific operations as well as its expansion into China. Before joining Lilly, Dr. Shi was the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of NetBig.com, an internet start-up, where he successfully grew the company to become the number one education and technology portal in China. He began his career as a management consultant with Ernst & Young in the Life Science Practice Group and specialized in sales and marketing strategy. Dr. Shi received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and a Master of Business Administration degree, both from Duke University. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Science and Technology of China.
Jonathan Wang, PhD, MBA - Senior Managing Director, OrbiMed Asia
Dr. Jonathan Wang is a Senior Managing Director, at OrbiMed Asia. He is a general partner at OrbiMed’s Asia-focused VC fund. Previously, he was General Manager at Burrill Greater China Group and worked for WI Harper Group and Walden International, two pioneers in the Asia-related VC industry. At WI Harper, Dr. Wang was a Managing Director, overseeing the firm’s life sciences activities worldwide. There he co-founded and incubated Bridge Laboratories. Dr. Wang is a Board Director at ForteBio, Inc. He is also co-founder and former Chairman of The BayHelix Group, an organization of Chinese life sciences business leaders. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Neurobiology from Columbia University, where he obtained scientific training under the supervision of Dr. Eric Kandel, a Nobel Laureate. Dr. Wang also earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
Ying Wang, MBA - Vice President, Northern Light Venture Capital
Ying joined NLVC in 2006, with experience in corporate _nance, M&A, and strategic consulting and fund raising for startups. Prior to NLVC, Ying led corporate development at PeopleSupport Inc. (NASDAQ: PSPT) and spearheaded its M&A efforts. Prior to that, Ying worked at GC3 Associates, helping clients in media and technology industries on strategic planning, _nancing, acquisitions and divestitures. Ying’s past experience also includes working with Boeing on a joint venture investment and business analysis at Dun & Bradstreet.
Ying holds a BA degree in Economics from the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, and a MBA degree from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Alex Wu, PhD - CEO, Crown Bioscience, Inc.
Dr. Alex Wu has over 20 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and research. He is a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Crown Bioscience, Inc., a preclinical CRO focused on cancer discovery biology. Before Crown Bioscience, he was Chief Business Officer of Starvax, Inc., a biopharmaceutical R&D company specialized in oncology and immunology. Prior to Starvax, he worked at Burrill & Company, a life science venture capital and merchant bank. He also co-founded and was Chief Operating Officer of Unimicro Technologies, a life science instrumentation company. Dr. Wu started his career with Hoffmann-La Roche, where he was Manager of Business Development and Strategic Planning. Dr. Wu obtained his B.S. in biochemistry from Fudan University, China and Ph.D. and MBA from University of California at Berkeley.
Stella Xu, PhD - Executive Director, Roche Global Pharma Partnering
Dr. Stella Xu is a Executive Director with Roche Global Pharma Partnering. Her major responsibilities include searching potential licensing opportunities (products / technologies), and supporting transaction discussions & alliance management with Asian partners. Prior to her current position, Stella had held multiple global positions in Roche Pharma Partnering and led more than 30 product-focused due diligence projects and alliances such as Toyama, Japan Tobacco, and Maxygen. Stella joined Roche from McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm that provides strategic advices to the top management of global business leaders. At McKinsey, she led consulting engagements with biopharmaceutical clients in areas ranging from R&D strategy, marketing & sales, to corporate development and M&A activities. Prior to McKinsey, Stella was a research scientist with Isis Pharmaceuticals. Stella received her BS in Biophysics from Peking University; her PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology from Northwestern University.
Yanning Yi, MBA - Vice President, The Balloch Group

Yanning Yi joined The Balloch Group in 2007 and is focused on the firm's investment banking practices in healthcare sector. Mr. Yi has worked with the healthcare team of CIBC World Markets originating IPO transactions in US. He has extensive experience on private equity deals for CRO, specialty pharma, drug discovery, and medical device companies, including KPCB’s most recent $15 million investment in Genscript. Prior to joining TBG, Mr. Yi worked at CIBC in Toronto where he focused on credit and investment portfolio risk management. Prior to that, Mr. Yi spent seven years with China's largest policy bank, the China Development Bank, where he completed over $3 billion debt transactions in power, mining, manufacturing, and infrastructure industries. Mr. Yi received his MBA from the University of Western Ontario, Canada and his BA in Economics from the China Institute of Finance and Banking.
Sherry Yin, LLM - Partner, Morrison & Foerster LLP
Sherry Yin is a partner in the Beijing office of Morrison & Foerster LLP who specializes in a wide range of commercial matters, including corporate planning and business strategies in China, corporate restructuring and structuring, mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital and securities matters. She has advised both multinational and Chinese clients involved in a broad range of industries, such as biotech, healthcare, telecommunications, e-business, energy, retail and logistics. Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Ms. Yin was a partner at a leading international firm and worked on a number of award winning transactions, including representing Sinopec Beijing Yanhua Petrochemical Company Limited in its US$500 million privatization by China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation. International Financial Law Review wrote that the transaction “stood out for the level of legal complexity and innovation” and “pioneered a new way for PRC companies to privatize overseas listed companies.” Ms. Yin also led the team that advised the underwriters in Shandong Chenming Paper Holding Limited’s IPO, the first Chinese company with three categories of shares issued and listed A-, B- and H-shares. This unprecedented transaction won the 2008 “Deal of the Year” award from China Law & Practice, in association with IFLR 1000. Ms. Yin received her LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from China University of Political Science and Law, 1984 and 1987, respectively. She attended the post graduate studies program at the Université de Paris II – Panthéon-Assas and an advanced U.S. law program sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation. Ms. Yin served as a lecturer and researcher at the Civil Law Institute of China University of Political Science and Law from 1987 to 1989. Ms. Yin is qualified to practice in the People’s Republic of China. She is a native Mandarin speaker and fluent in English and French.
Shiyuan Zhang - General Manager, Southwest Securities Research and Development Center
Male, 42 years old, Southwest Securities, chief researcher at Beijing Normal University, MBA Visiting Professor.
He graduated from Sichuan University in 1994, received a master's degree. Successively in Zhuhai Livzon Group and Chongqing International Trust and Investment companies engaged in technology development and industry research; 1999 - October 2007: Southwest Securities Research and Development Center, she served as manager of industrial companies, R & D Center, Vice President and General Manager. The long-term attention to China's health industry and capital market development, major research achievements include: the completion of Chongqing in 1999 the development of bio-pharmaceutical industry research; in 2002 to participate and the drafting of the "Beijing Zhongguancun Bio-pharmaceutical industry with the new study"; state "strategy of China's bio-economy research "Total Task Force members;" China's biological industry development report"(2003,2006,2007,2008,2009 years) investment and financing articles and chief editorial writer, on the capital markets, a number of issues have access to the Securities Association of China and the Chongqing Finance Association Award.
Gang Zhao - Managing Director, Director, SBCVC

Mr. Zhao joined in SBCVC in 2006, in last three years, he most focus on healthcare related investment opportunities, such as Chemclin, EDAN and Di’An Diagnosis etc., Mr. Zhao also explored investment opportunities in IT, clean tech etc. high tech fields. Prior to joining Softbank, he was with China Galaxy Securities Ltd Co., where he worked on the process of several IPO projects in A-share market. Mr. Zhao had also worked in Beijing Haidian Hospital for three years since 1999, serving as a doctor in general surgical department. Mr. Zhao holds a MBA from Economic and Management college of Tsinghua University, Bachelor Degree of Clinical Medical from Beijing Medical University.
