Keynote Speakers: 

Greg B. Scott - President and Founder, ChinaBio® Accelerator and Founding Principal, ChinaBio® Consulting

Mr. Scott has helped launch over thirty life science startups in the U.S. and China as a founder, investor and advisor. He founded ChinaBio® Accelerator to help fund and mentor early stage life science companies in China. He is also the Founding Principal of ChinaBio® Consulting which assists U.S. and China life science companies and investors leverage the opportunities available in China. Mr. Scott is also the president and co-founder of Life Science Angels, an angel investment group that has funded 26 biotechnology and medical device companies since 2005, and executive editor of the ChinaBio® Today newsletter. He previously held senior executive positions at Price Waterhouse, Capgemini and MCI, and was the co-founder of a 200-person consulting firm. Mr. Scott attended University of Missouri, where he studied mathematics, microbiology and computer science.

Li Chen, Ph.D. - Chief Scientific Officer at Roche’s R&D Center in Shanghai

Li Chen, Ph.D., is the Chief Scientific Officer at Roche’s R&D Center in Shanghai. In 2004, he was one of the pioneers helping to build up the center in a record seven months. Besides developing and implementing the Research strategy for China as well as handling external collaborations and research programs, he remains a scientist at heart. With a current team of 80 scientists, he drives Discovery Research mainly in medicinal chemistry and research technology. He also manages the Research operations including chemistry, pharmacology, biology and discovery technology, as well as Research informatics and inventory in Shanghai. Li has been with Roche since 1992. He started out as a Senior and Principle Scientist in drug discovery research in Nutley. His co-invention of R411, a clinical drug for asthma, dates back to these years. While in Nutley, he also assumed the role as Head of Combinatorial Chemistry and established the respective department with a focus on high quality lead generation. Before going back to China to take his current position, Li led the High Throughput Chemistry and Research Project from 2000 to 2004. He also served as a member of the Roche Patent Coordination Committee in Nutley – quite appropriate given that he has more than 50 patent applications and scientific publications of his own. Li holds a bachelor’s degree in 1982 from Zhengzhou University in China. He continued his academic career earning a master’s degree in 1985 from East China Normal University in Shanghai where he also gave lectures in Organic and Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Li, a Chinese citizen, completed his university education with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Iowa State University in the United States in 1992. Li is a member of Board of Director of RRDCC, Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professional Association (SAPA).

Christopher Cooper, MBA - Partner Transaction Services, Deloitte & Touche

Chris is a Partner in the Deloitte & Touche Beijing office transaction services M&A team and he is Leader of the Firm’s China PE practice specializing in Private Equity deals and inbound investment into China. Over the past 20 years, Chris has worked on a variety of business and financial advisory projects with an emphasis on manufacturing, automotive, energy and Asian business. Chris has advised, and in most cases led, more than 200 M&A diligence transactions of all sizes. While working in San Jose, California, Chris advised on a variety of public and private M&A transactions with deal values ranging from several million to over one billion dollars. In 1994 Chris was among one of the first Big Four consultants relocate to China where he assisted various multinational companies in developing their China investment strategy. In 1997, Chris relocated to Chicago, where he led the M&A services to Ford Motor Company in Asia Pacific. In this role Chris led many large due diligence projects in Asia. Chris has recently returned to Beijing to focus on PE and U.S. inbound investment. In 1988, Chris graduated from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and is now a member of the University of Michigan Business School Board of Governors and he is an advisor to the Dean. Chris is a qualified member of the AICPA.

Carl Firth, PhD, MBA, Vice President, Asia - Merrill Lynch

Dr Carl Firth is currently head of Healthcare in Asia. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, he worked in Singapore as Regional Business Development Director for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, where he looked after business development and strategic projects across the Asia Pacific region. Previously, Carl worked in China for 3 years, where he was responsible for the commercial development of new products, and for business development activities in the China market. Carl has held positions in other commercial areas in the UK, including acquisitions, licensing and competitive intelligence, and has over 5 years of pharmaceutical R&D experience. Carl holds a PhD in molecular biology from Cambridge University and an Executive MBA from London Business School.

Jennifer (Jing-Shan) Hu, PhD, Director of Licensing & External Research - Merck & Co

Dr. Jing-Shan Hu is responsible for identifying and developing new product and technology opportunities in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan for Merck in the area of partnership, licensing-in, and acquisition. Prior to joining Merck, Jing-Shan spent three years at Roche Palo Alto as Research Leader, heading Functional Biology and Toxicogenomics. Previously, Jing-Shan worked at Affymetrix in various capacities, including establishing and managing programs with partners to demonstrate the application of Affymetrix GeneChip technology in Toxicology/Pharmacogenomics studies. Jing-Shan started her career at Human Genome Sciences, Inc. as a scientist and later as Project Leader of its VEGF-2 Protein Therapeutics Program. Jing-Shan did her post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. She earned her PhD from Univ. of Texas & M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and her bachelor's degree from Peking University in Beijing. Jing-Shan has authored 15 papers in peer reviewed journals such as Science, Nature Genetics, and Nature. She is also an inventor of 16 patents and patent applications.

Richard Li, MBA, Managing Director of Legend Capital

Mr. Li joined Legend Capital in 2001 as Vice President and was promoted to Senior Vice President, Executive Director and now Managing Director. He oversees the investment opportunities around Shanghai area and sectors like outsourcing services. Prior to Legend Capital, he was the new business development manager at the then Legend Group’s Business Development Dept from 1998 to 2000. He served as business development consultant for Saint-Gobain Group (Paris) from 2000 to 2001. Richard has rich experience in and an in-dept understanding of the Telecom industry where he enjoys extensive networks and resources. He has good knowledge of various business models and information technology industry. Richard sits on the Boards of 7234 Communications, Pharmaron and SpeedNet, and is responsible for investments in CDIM, Photonic Bridges (acquired by Siemens), Taner International, etc. Richard holds a dual B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Economics& Management and a master’s degree in Management Engineering from Tshinghua University, and an MBA from College Des Ingenieurs (Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées). .

Nisa Leung, MBA, Partner - Qiming Venture Partners

Nisa Leung is a Partner of Qiming Ventures specializing in health care investments. Prior to joining Qiming, she was co-founder of Biomedic Holdings with operations and investments in medical devices, pharmaceuticals and health care services in China including most recently a founding investment into Novamed Pharmaceuticals Inc (Shanghai), a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on oncology and CNS. Nisa was Venture Partner of PacRim Ventures in Menlo Park, and was previously with Softbank/Mobius Venture Capital. Nisa Leung received her MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Rebecca Lin, MBA, Vice President - Fidelity Asia Ventures

Rebecca Lin joined Fidelity Asia Venture in 2007. She focuses on investment in healthcare and growth capital sectors.  Before 2001 to 2007, while working for CMT ChinaValue Capital Partners and Vision Capital China, Rebecca focused on investment in IT and healthcare sectors.  From 2000 to 2001, Rebecca worked at A. T. Kearny’s New York office, providing management consulting service to clients in banking, telecom and consumer goods sectors.  From 1994 to 1997, Rebecca worked as an auditor at Arthur Andersen’s Shenzhen office, leading various engagements including IPO and IAS audits.  Rebecca is a non-practicing member of China Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She has a MBA degree from Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor degree in Economics from Shenzhen University.

Jonathan Wang, PhD, Managing Director, Asia - Orbimed Advisors

Dr. Jonathan Wang is a Managing Director at OrbiMed, the world’s largest healthcare and life sciences-dedicated investment firm, with close to $6 billion under management.  He is a Co-Founder and General Partner at OrbiMed’s $200 million Asia-focused VC fund.  Previously, he was General Manager at Burrill Greater China Group and worked for WI Harper Group and Walden International, two pioneers in the Asia-related VC industry. At WI Harper, Dr. Wang was a Managing Director, overseeing the firm’s life sciences activities worldwide.  Dr. Wang is a Board Director at ForteBio, Inc. and Co-Founder at Bridge Laboratories.  He is also Co-Founder and former Chairman of The BayHelix Group, a premier organization of Chinese life sciences business leaders.  He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Neurobiology from Columbia University, where he obtained scientific training under the supervision of Dr. Eric Kandel, a Nobel Laureate. Dr. Wang also earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University.

Steven D. Wang, PhD, MBA, CFA

Steven D. Wang is a Vice President Investment Banking in Morgan Stanley based in Hong Kong. Previously he was a senior analyst with ADAR Investment Management and Clinton Group in New York, where he was in charge of the fund’s equity and credit investment in the healthcare, chemical and industrial sectors. Prior to his experience in hedge fund, he was a senior associate at Rothschild Inc., an European advisory firm that focuses on complex corporate mergers and acquisitions. Steven started his Wall Street career as an investment-banking associate at Banc of America Securities in New York. He was a senior research scientist at Schering-Plough before his career in the financial industry. Steven was born and raised in Mainland China. He received his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University and his M.B.A. in Finance (with Distinction) from New York University. He is Charted Financial Analyst.

Bo Wen, MBA - Executive Director, The Balloch Group

Bo Wen joined The Balloch Group in 2005 and leads the company’s investment banking deal sourcing team. He has worked with the firm’s alliance partner CIBC World Markets in participating in more than 30 IPOs or follow-on offerings in the U.S. and has closed five private equity deals for Chinese clients. From 2003 to 2004, Mr. Wen served as Deputy General Manager at the Chongqing-based New Open Group, a real estate developer and investor in the education sector. Prior to that, he spent six years with CPMIEC, a leading Chinese aerospace firm, including three years overseeing the company’s business in Iran. Mr. Wen received his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business in Canada and graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology with dual bachelor degrees in Welding Technology and Technological English.

David Xu, PhD, Managing Partner - Mingly China Growth Fund

David Xu is the Managing Partner of Mingly China Growth Fund. David has over 10 years of investment banking experience in China. Previously, David worked at EBICC, Create Capital, China Fortune Securities and Goldman Sachs. He also worked as a research fellow at Columbia Medical Center for 7 years. David received his BS degree from University of Science & Technology of China, Ph.D. in Microbiology from Columbia University, and MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.

徐立新博士是名力中国成长基金的管理合伙人。 徐博士在中国有十多年的投融资经验。此前,他曾在坤茂国际投资公司,格雷特,中富证券和高盛公司工作。 他还在哥伦比亚医学中心做过七年的科研工作。 徐立新博士本科毕业于中国科技大学,并获得了哥伦比亚大学微生物学博士和麻省理工学院斯隆商学院工商管理硕士.

Chika Yoshinaga, MD, Vice President Asia - Sofinnova Partners

Chika Yoshinaga, MD, joined Sofinnova Partners in 2007.  Over her four years as Deputy General Manager at NIF SMBC Ventures, Chika invested in five life sciences companies, four based in Europe and one in the United States. Three have completed initial public offerings: Acorda Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ACOR), BioXell (SWX: BXLN), and Innate Pharma (EURONEXT: IPH). Prior to joining the venture capital industry, Chika worked as a System Engineer in the Information System Division of the Health and Science Research Institute in Yokohama, Japan. She was also a physician intern and practiced medicine at WuaTong Hospital in Shanghai, China. Chika earned an M.S. in Bio-Engineering from Yokohama National University in Japan, as well as an M.D. in Clinical Medicine from Shanghai Medical University in China.

Wei Zhou, PhD, JD, Partner - Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

Dr. Wei Zhou is a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, P.C., a leading law firm focusing on technology and growth company legal issues, where he focuses on corporate and intellectual property issues facing life sciences companies in the United States and China. Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Zhou was a vice president of intellectual property and advanced technology at Affymetrix, inc. (Santa Clara, CA), where he served as general manager of the company’s China operations. During his time at Affymetrix, Wei made significant contributions to the company’s patent portfolio—ranked by the MIT Technology Review as No. 1 among pharmaceutical and biotech companies in 2002—and completed numerous scientific collaborations and partnering agreements, technology licensing agreements, commercial arrangements, and acquisitions. Before joining Affymetrix, Dr. Zhou was an attorney at Pennie & Edmonds LLP in Palo Alto, where he focused on the fields of pharmaceutical compounds, biotechnology, bioinformatics, immunology, functional genomics, drug-discovery processes, and computer software.  Prior to embarking on his legal career, Dr. Zhou was a postdoctoral fellow in molecular and cellular gastroenterology at Emory University Medical School. Dr. Zhou obtained his J.D. from Stanford Law School, his PhD from Virginia Tech.  He is also a graduate of the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.
